Why do people continue to commit crimes?

Research shows that the main causes are:
weak problem solving skills
poor decision making skills
weak personal control
poor social skills

How does the cost of community sentences and prison compare?

On average a community order sentence such as probation supervision costs about £2,500 per order.  The orders which require more intensive input can cost more.

It costs about £35,000 a year to keep someone in prison.

What we do: Introduction

This section outlines the main areas of our work with offenders.

Court Reports

Other Services

We work to ensure offenders complete their community orders. If they do not comply they are returned to court for further sentencing. Courts may choose to make the requirements of the order more onerous, impose a fine or impose a custodial sentence.

What prevents people from re-offending?

  • attendance on effective offending behaviour programmes aimed at the right offenders, run in prison or in the community, can stop further offending
  • getting a job is very effective in helping previously unemployed offenders live crime-free lives
  • a high percentage of persistent offenders have a serious drug misuse problem and so they commit more crime. So getting treatment is often the first step to stop further offending.
